The Work & Mind of Lulu Puras

To Lulu Puras, interior design is all about transforming spaces to create a better quality of life. Puras is a Puerto Rico based designer who recently helped revamp the look and feel of HiBird’s restored hotel in Condado. “Our work is very honest. We always aim for honesty in everything we do, and that’s why we can enhance the quality of life for the people who will inhabit those spaces,” she says.

The interior design process aims to maximize the space of each area and match it to the people who will be occupying it. The owners of HiBird contacted Puras because they wanted visitors to feel like they were in a home instead of a hotel. The renovations were inspired by the building’s history, which is originally from the 1950s and was rehabilitated to become the HiBird hotel. “When we started with the design inspiration, we began studying and exploring what was happening in those years,” says Puras.

“Searching for a unique design feature for HiBird, we designed breezeblocks. Each room has one, bringing that look that was also present in Puerto Rico’s houses in the 1950s, where there was a direct connection between light and air.” Other elements they created for the renovations include circular terracotta dividers, which Puras says integrate “the warmth of the earth” into the space.

Puras also incorporated terrazzo flooring, which was typical for the 1950s, and warmer tropical hues to amplify the space. “It was essential for us to move away from white and cream colors and bring in coral colors that were heavily used during that time. These colors also bring warmth and a sense of well-being to the space.” Puras was also inspired to include curved lines to create a softer and more modern look. “We wanted to move away from straight lines and work with curves,” she says. “It’s a very distinctive element that will greatly enhance the enjoyment of the spaces.”
